Summer is always an exciting and enriching program full of indoor and outdoor activities. Summer camp activities are created with the Montessori Method in mind, building on the foundation of self-directed curiosity, developed in the traditional Montessori classroom.
Activities will include water play, tending to the garden, music, art, dance, picnics, special guests, and theme based curriculum involving movement and imagination.
This summer the toddlers (12 months-2 years) will have many exciting themes planned. Each week we will be exploring a different nature theme with related language and art activities.
The summer program will be held in their familiar classroom and will follow the same predicable schedule as they did during the school year with additional water play during their outdoor time. This will allow consistency in routine that toddlers need to feel comfortable and be open to learning.
If your child is two years old by the beginning of summer, he/she may be moving up to the 2 & 3 year old classroom this summer if space permits.
Dessert Friday caps each summer camp week with all children two years and up making dessert. The primary children make dessert for the toddlers. Parents may also opt to buy a pizza lunch of Friday which will be supplemented with a side of fruit and chocolate milk or lemonade.
SUMMER CAMP THEMES
WEEK 1: HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
Our garden will be given some extra TLC as we add some new plants. Each camper will plant a mystery seed to take home and be surprised to discover what it becomes. We hope to have an abundance of produce for the children to enjoy while at school plus share with families to take home throughout the summer.
WEEK 2: KIDS KITCHEN!
We will be putting on our chef’s aprons! This week campers will be cooking and tasting. The children will learn about kitchen safety, math, cooking, and manners. Montessori Country Day Cook Books will be coming home at the end of the week.
WEEK 3: WOODLAND ANIMALS IN OUR OWN BACKYARDS!
We will be exploring animals living in our own backyards and all around North Carolina. We will discover how to be safe around wild animals and how we can protect them by keeping them in their natural habitats. We will learn about nocturnal animals and hibernation with art, songs and play.
WEEK 4: SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS!
A look into the world of science and how much fun it can be! Summer is a wonderful time to explore science outdoors with our children. We will mix scientific potions, check our results and draw conclusions.
WEEK 5: GOOD OLD USA!
July 3-7 (No school on July 4)
We will be celebrating this amazing country of ours! This week will be filled with the pride of red, white and blue. We will explore our country by working on craft projects, making foods like apple pie and lemonade. We will be singing patriotic songs and end the week with a flag waving parade.
WEEK 6: LET’S GO CAMPING!
Our focus this week will be nature along with singing campfire songs and making and eating yummy treats. If children have sleeping bags we’d appreciate sending them to school for naptime around our MLC campfire.
WEEK 7: WORLD TRAVELERS!
We will be traveling around the world learning about cultures through arts, games, food and music.
WEEK 8: DINOSAUR DIG!
We will be going back in time to an era of big lizards. The children will go on a dinosaur dig where they will learn about dinosaurs that were in our own backyards here in America. The fun continues while they make their own fossils and learn about prehistoric animals.
WEEK 9: OOEY GOOEY CONCOCTIONS
July 31-August 4
Have you ever tried transferring Oobie from bucket to bucket, or even grab a handful of Gak and keep it in your hands? Make your own play dough? We will be attempting these and other impossible tasks with lots of different squishy, squashy mixtures. Everyone will take home a recipe book filled with these special recipes at the end of the week.
WEEK 10: LET THE MUSIC MOVE YOU!
We will be singing and dancing this week more than usual. We will be making our own instruments and the MCD Summer Camp Band will perform as the teachers make a video for parents to enjoy.
